What Is the 8-9-12 Rule?
The 8-9-12 rule is a classic backgammon formula used to quickly evaluate a position during a pure race. It helps you decide when to offer the doubling cube and whether your opponent should take it.
The rule is based on each player’s remaining pip count:
- Double when your opponent’s pip count is at least 8% higher than yours.
- Redouble when it is at least 9% higher and you own the cube.
- Your opponent should take the double if their pip count is no more than 12% higher than yours.
To make pip-count comparisons easier, enable Show Pip Count and Advantage in the game settings. A numerical indicator at the edge of the screen will show your pip-count advantage as a percentage.
