What is Elo ranking?

The Elo rating system is a widely used ranking method that helps measure a player’s skill level. It is primarily used in board games with two participants, such as chess and backgammon.

What is the Elo Rating?

Your Elo rating reflects your skill level compared to other players. Using this rating, you can determine your rank and skill category.

By default, every new player starts with a rating of 1500 Elo points.

What Affects Your Elo Rating?

  • Wins and losses – Your rating increases when you win and decreases when you lose.
  • Match length – Winning a longer match earns you more Elo points than winning a short match, since longer matches rely more on skill than luck.
  • Opponent’s rating – Defeating a higher-rated opponent grants you more Elo points than beating a lower-rated player.
  • Number of matches played – Players with less than 500 experience points have a rating acceleration mode, which helps them reach their true skill level faster.

What Does NOT Affect Your Elo Rating?

  • The number of rounds won/lost within a match – It doesn’t matter if you win 13-12 or 13-0; a victory is a victory, and your Elo increase will be the same.

How is Elo Calculated?

The Elo rating is determined using the following formulas:

Winning points formula:

W = (1 – P) × M × S;

Losing points formula:

L = P × M × S,

Where:

  • W – Elo points won by the winner
  • L – Elo points lost by the loser
  • P – Probability of winning the match
  • S – the number of rating points at stake during a match. This is a base parameter that determines how many points a player will gain for a win or lose for a defeat.

The probability of winning (P) is determined using the following formula:

 P = 1 / (1 + 10^(-D * N / 2000) ) ,

where:

  • D – The difference between the Elo ratings of the two players. This is calculated separately for each player. For one player, D will be positive (meaning they have a higher rating than their opponent), while for the other, D will be negative. Example for Player 1: D1 = R1 – R2 , where R₁ is Player 1’s Elo rating and R₂ is Player 2’s Elo rating.
  • N – The length of the match (the number of points required to win).
  • M – The "acceleration modifier" used to adjust rating changes for new players. It helps newer players reach their actual skill level faster.

How is the Acceleration Modifier (M) Calculated:

 if E > 400, then M = (500 – E)/100,

if E < 400, then М = 1,

where:

E – Player's experience, calculated as the total sum of points played across all matches. Example: If a player has played 5 matches to 3 points, their experience (E) = 15. The less experience a player has, the higher the acceleration modifier, meaning their rating changes more drastically. Once E exceeds 400, the acceleration effect is removed, and the rating adjusts at a normal rate.

The base Elo points at stake (S) are determined by the following formula:

      S = 4 * N ,

where:

N – Match length (number of points required to win). The longer the match, the more Elo points are at stake.

Example Calculation

Let’s take an example match between two players. Player А (1100 Elo and 675 experience points) and Player B (1500 Elo and 950 experience points). Match length: First to 3 points.

Let's calculate how many points Player A will gain for a victory and how many points Player B will lose for a defeat. The Elo difference will be: D₁ = 1100 – 1500 = -400, D₂ = +400.

Now, let's calculate the probability of winning for both players: P₁ = 0.31 and P₂ = 0.69.

Next, we determine the rating points at stake:  S = 4 × √3 = 6.92.

The acceleration modifiers (M) for both players will be M = 1, since both players have more than 400 experience. Now, we have all the necessary parameters to calculate the final result.

The number of points Player A will gain for a victory: W = (1 – P) × M × S = (1 – 0.31) × 1 × 6.92 = 4.77.

The number of points Player B will lose for a defeat: L = P × M × S = 0.69 × 6.92 = 4.77.

If Player B had won instead, they would have gained: W = 2.14, since they are the more experienced player and have a significantly higher Elo rating than Player A..

To gain more Elo rating points, you should play against players with a similar or higher rating and avoid playing against lower-rated opponents, as you will gain very few points even if you win.

Where Can I See My Elo?

After logging into the main menu, tap the green button on the left side of the screen. Then, select the "Statistics" button. In the new window, you will immediately see the first "Stats" tab. Your Elo rank is displayed in the "Elo Score"

Elo Levels

To make it easier to group players, especially for matchmaking in tournaments, the game uses Elo levels. There are 7 levels, each covering a different rating range.

Level 1< 1275
Level 21275 - 1425
Level 31425 - 1575
Level 41575 - 1725
Level 51725 - 1875
Level 61875 - 2025
Level 7> 2025
